The love affair between the city of Valencia and tennis goes back to 1995 when Valencia held an 'International Series' tournament: the Valencia Open Tennis. The year 2009 marked a turning point, a step forward was taken and the tournament was given the status of Valencia Open 500, the category just below the Masters 1,000 and Grand Slam tournaments.

The site of the City of Arts and Sciences is the headquarters of the tournament and the Agora building is a symbol for the Valencia Tennis Open, and also for the city that welcomes it.
